New ATP career-high rankings, November 3, 2014
A large cache this week led by SUPERSTAR Stevie Johnson, who was juuuust outside the top 40 for a month and who lost in the first round of Paris Masters qualies to flavor-of-the-week Lucas Pouille. Fortunately for the USC alum, a few guys who had been blocking his rise finally lost enough points for Steve to take his rightful place. What a year! What a guy!
Paris qualifier #jacksock got jobbed yet again with a second-round match against his nemesis, eventual finalist Milos Raonic. He also is on the outside looking in of the London WTF doubles event. But his solid play this fall left a lot of people salivating for what could come next year.
Jenkins continued to shine Down Under, reaching the Traralgon 1 singles and doubles finals. Three weeks ago he was well outside the Top 100 and now he's a lock for Australian Open qualies. That's what I call a successful road trip.
And we now see the points from the Brownsville Futures event, and it's great news for Novikov (finalist), Mmoh (champion), and Baughman (semifinalist). Mmoh becomes, I believe, the #3 16-year-old in the world, after Stefan Kozlov (USA) and Duckhee Lee (KOR).
**Edited to add: totally forgot Austin Krajicek in the initial post. A run to the Reunion Island quarterfinal got him where he is now - a rise of 82 spots from a year ago and quietly one of the better 2014s for US men.
Townsend had herself a run to the semis in Toronto but like countrywoman Grace Min last week, came up a match short of the top 100. Given that this is the "end of the year" rankings-wise for the WTA, it's too bad those two women won't end up in that rarified air, but there's no doubt in my mind both will be there ... soon.
Whoriskey had a solid two wins herself in Toronto, and is clearly full of beans right now. She's showing she can compete with players ranked far ahead of her, instead of just beating scrubs. Stewart, meanwhile, is having a bit less luck against strong players. But she keeps motoring up the rankings, and hopefully learning big lessons along the way.
Finally, WELCOME TO THE TOP 1000, Nicole Frenkel. Her Colombia $10K finalist points from a week ago are making their appearance, and next week she'll get another boost thanks to her run to the semis this past week.
***Another, even more unforgivable lapse, in neglecting to include Jennifer Brady in the initial post. Her run to the final in New Braunfels had plenty of implications beyond her new ranking, but let us take a moment to acknowledge it anyway. It's a tremendous accomplishment!
