New USA Career-High Rankings, July 13, 2015

Each week I will bring you a list of USAmerican players who have reached a new career-high ranking (CHR). This list covers all players in the Top 1000. Players outside the Top 1000 will generally not be included unless they earned at least one point since the prior ranking period. See all the CHR posts.

New ATP Career-High Rankings, July 13, 2015

There are a LOT of new career ATP high rankings this week - a two-week rankings break and four USA Futures in that time, along with the college season being over, will do that. So many, in fact, that I divided the chart into two parts - one (still very long one) for guys who improved their rankings, and the second for the 8 guys making their ATP debuts this week.

Wow, where to start? Oh, I know - Winnetka, where I was pretty much all week. The $50K Challenger north of Chicago where Daniel Nguyen had a memorable run to the final (and came within 2 points of a title). He's now in the Top 200, and the #13 American. With his 48 points, he also helped protect himself from the 60 points he has coming off through the rest of the summer and secured a spot in the US Open qualifying tournament (he was 2 out from Wimbledon).

The other player who gained mega points was Jared Hiltzik, who reached his first challenger quarterfinal and who reached his first Futures semifinal of the USA F21 in Wichita. Big big big from the Illini.

More USA F21/Wichita: Clay Thompson reached the quarters by upsetting the #1 seed Darian King - and then got beaten by J. Hiltzik. And 16-year-old Zeke Clark qualified and beat Tom Fawcett to pick up his ... second ATP point.

USA F19/Tulsa: Clark's first ATP point came as a wild card the week prior. Both tournaments are included in this week's rankings. Other big wins - Andre Dome into the semis, and three first-career wins: qualifier Liam Caruana (17yo) over Gonzales Austin, qualifier Henry Craig (University of Denver) over wildcard Max Schnur, and Tomas Stillman (UTSA) over qualifier Arsav Mohanty.

USA F18/Rochester: Sekou Bangoura made his fourth career final, falling to Emilio Gomez (USC/ECU) in straight sets. Along the way, he beat qualifier Dominic Cotrone in the semis and Winston Lin in the quarters. Gomez beat two other list entrants along the way: Alex Rybakov in the semis and Quinton Vega in the quarters. Finally, 17yo wildcard Matthew Gamble got his first point with a win over Maksim Tikhomirov.

USA F20/Pittsburgh: Again, the winner was Gomez. But for our purposes, Alexios Halebian's run to the semis was a huge accomplishment, and brought him into the Top 800 for the first time. Cameron Silverman got to the quarters. 16yo Cincinnatian John McNally secured wins over Collin Johns and wildcard (and local product) A.J. Catanzariti (Texas A&M) to launch both McNally and Catanzariti into the rankings. Rybakov won a round, and then was upset by Dennis Uspensky. Finally, Nicholas Hu and Caleb Troy each qualified and won a round, Troy over lucky loser Joseph Van Meter.

Elsewhere:

CAN F4: Eric Quigley reached the final, losing to 2014 US Open boys champion Omar Jasika in a third-set tiebreak. Two USC guys - Johnny Wang and Eric Johnson - each won a round, as did UC Santa Cruz Banana Slug Matt Seeberger. Gotta get it up for anyone reaching a career high at age 30, especially a DIII guy, so congrats Matt!

BEL F4: Deiton Baughman got to a semifinal in De Haan, Belgium. The 4th-ranked American teen was outside the Top 1000 a year ago. The grind seems to be paying off for Slim!

ZIM F3: Michael Grant reached the quarters and Anderson Reed qualified and got a win.

ISR F9: Raleigh Smith won a round.

*Note on William Bushamuka: The 19yo University of Kentucky player is at a CHR of 973. The question for the purpose of this list is whether he represents USA or not. In the ITF draws - such as ZIM F3, where he reached the quarters - he's listed as USA but in the live scores he's COD (Cote d'Ivoire Democratic Republic of the Congo). Similarly, in his ATP profile he's listed as COD but when you do a search for USA players on the new ATP site he shows up - the lone non-American flag on the list. So, it's a mystery.

Alexander Sarkissian and Frederick Saba moved up when others moved down.

Baton Rouge $25K: Danielle Lao won! 50 points to get her on the verge of the Top 300. In the semis, she beat Usue Arconada who upset top seed Taylor Townsend in a first-round, third set tiebreak. University of Mississippi's Julia Jones makes her ranking debut thanks to qualifying and making a quarterfinal. Another SEC qualifier, Clemson's Keri Wong, won a round as well, as did an SEC wildcard, Lauren Embree (Florida). 16yo qualifier Kelly Chen also won a round.

Sophie Chang qualified to pick up a point.

El Paso $25K: This event was won by qualifier Jamie Loeb, who jumped up to #445, less than a hundred spots below her 2013 career high. In the final she beat #2 seed Jennifer Brady, who is now the 5th player with college experience in the WTA Top 200 (Irina Falconi, Nicole GibbsMaria Sanchez, and Julie Coin). University of California's Maegan Manasse, a wildcard, reached the quarterfinals to enter the rankings for the first time. Winners of one match: Nadja Gilchrist (UGA) and Kylie McKenzie.

Dasha Ivanova and Amy Zhu each got a point for qualifying, while 17yo Karina Traxler entered the rankings via playing her first round match, even though she was beaten 6-0 6-0 by Chanel Simmonds.

Mauritius $10K: 15yo Jaeda Daniel reached her second Indian Ocean island final. And then she went up to Belgium a couple of days later and won a round at the $10K in Brussels.

CiCi Bellis, Michaela Gordon, Erica Oosterhout, Sofia Kenin, Kristina Smith, Caroline Price, Malika Rose, and Kayla Day moved up when others moved down.
