New USA Career-High Rankings, May 4, 2015

Each week I will bring you a list of USAmerican players who have reached a new career-high ranking (CHR). This list covers all players in the Top 1000. Any player outside the Top 1000 will not be included unless they actually have earned at least one point from their previous career-high ranking. See all the CHR posts.

Frances Tiafoe once again stole the show this week, with his legendary run to the Tallahassee Challenger final, a performance that secured him the USTA French Open wild card and saw him become the youngest American in the Top 300. This kid, who started the year ranked outside the Top 1000, is now sitting in the Top 140 in the Race to London. He's reworking his schedule now, apparently in conjunction with new coach Jose Higueras, so we'll see what the summer looks like - continue to build his ranking via the summer challengers? Try to qualify for the North American ATP events? Or take the many, many wild cards he'll be assuredly offered into main draws of those events?

Also helping themselves in Tallahassee were Jared Donaldson (SF), buddies Bjorn Fratangelo and Mitchell Krueger (QF), and Dennis Novikov and Tommy Paul (2nd Round). Austin Krajicek fell in the first round of Tallahassee (to Krueger) but still managed to move up when others couldn't defend points.

Similar to Krajicek, Alexander Sarkissian and Michael Grant moved up thanks to others falling.

THA F1: The only other jump of note came courtesy of Andre Dome, the former Cal Poly star who reached his second Futures quarterfinal this year, in Thailand. Watch this space next week, as Dome would go on last week to win the THA F2 tournament, a huge moment for him that will see a big result in his ranking.

There was nothing of note on the WTA level for Americans, as Madison Brengle lost in the first round of Prague (but moved up when Irina-Camilia Begu dropped down).  Coco Vandeweghe did that, also, while Christina McHale fell in the second round of Marrakech. A step below that, though...

Charlottesville, Va. $50K: Katerina Stewart's run to the final (where she would lose to comeback kid Allie Kiick) not only put her into the lead of the USTA Har-Tru Wild Card Challenge, it also put her on the very edge of the Top 200, which will likely be enough to guarantee her entry into Wimbledon qualies!

The other big story of C'ville was 16-year-old Usue Arconada's quarterfinal, which included a win over Julia Boserup from a set down. Arconada has only 6 of her 41 points to defend until February, so this will almost certainly not be her last appearance on these lists in 2015.

Nicole Frenkel qualified and won a round at the tournament, giving her 13 points, or almost as many as the 15 picked up by Arconada, who went a round further.  Caitlin Whoriskey also won a round, while Jessica Ho won a round in qualies.

Rianna Valdes picked up a point by virtue of her wild card into the tournament (she lost in three sets to Arconada).

Guadalajara, Mexico $15K: The prior week, Malika Rose more than doubled her point total, from 4 to 9, thanks to qualifying for and reaching her first pro-level quarterfinal. The former Oklahoma State University Cowgirl (and Sloane Stephens bestie) is now into the Top 1000!

Also in Guadalajara, Jessica Failla (incoming USC) made the 2nd round.

Like Brengle, Louisa Chirico, Sachia Vickery, CiCi Bellis, and Marie all moved up due to others moving down.
